On Thursday, December 18, at 18:30, the Menuhin Hall of The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao will present a special classical guitar concert. Wang You, Associate Professor of Classical Guitar at our school, and young guitarist Sun Xuanxuan will share the stage with internationally acclaimed French guitarist Jérémy Jouve and students from our classical guitar program, offering an evening that blends Eastern and Western musical traditions.
Highlights and Program Guide
The concert program is thoughtfully designed, featuring authentic French works, dialogues between Chinese and Western classics, and heartwarming performances by teachers and students together:
- Voice of France: Experience Pure French Guitar Music
Jérémy Jouve will perform several works by his compatriot, French composer Mathias Duplessy, including Nocturne, Destin d’amour, and Ulan Bator. The interpretation of French compositions by a French performer promises a truly authentic listening experience.
- Strings East and West: When Chinese Folk Songs Meet Classical Guitar
The concert will feature four classical guitar adaptations of Chinese folk songs—Lullaby, Jasmine Flower, Why Are the Flowers So Red, and Alamuhan—performed as duets by Sun Xuanxuan and Jérémy Jouve.
- Teachers and Students in Harmony, A Tribute to the Sea and the City
Jérémy Jouve, Sun Xuanxuan, and Professor Wang You will join classical guitar students from our school in performing O Sea, My Hometown. This special guitar ensemble showcases teacher-student collaboration and serves as a musical tribute to the city of Qingdao.
Creative Presentations and Premieres
The concert will also present an arranged version for guitar ensemble of the third movement from Vivaldi’s Summer from The Four Seasons. Additionally, excerpts from Eduardo Sainz de la Maza’s suite My Little Donkey and I will be premiered in a unique “guitar + recitation” format, interweaving spoken word with guitar performance.
At The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao, Discover More Possibilities of Classical Guitar
Since establishing its classical guitar program, The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao has been committed to providing students with internationally aligned educational resources and stage experience. The classical guitar is not only a time-honored solo instrument but also deeply integrated into chamber music and collaborative performance. Under the philosophy of holistic education, its musical depth and learning pathways reveal rich and individualized dimensions.
It is worth noting that during the 2025 admissions season, students from our classical guitar program have achieved outstanding results. Li Minglun received offers from three top institutions—The Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory, and the Manhattan School of Music—along with a substantial scholarship from Juilliard. Ran Wenxuan was also admitted to the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München based on her excellent performance.
