Flowers, Moon and Musical Poetry | Young Faculty Concert of the Violin Department on 8 May

In the fragrant month of May, the sound of strings conveys deep emotion. The "Flowers, Moon and Musical Poetry" Young Faculty Concert of the Violin Department of The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao will be held as scheduled on 8 May at 19:00 in the Menuhin Hall.

Planned and coordinated by Professor Wang Hong, Head of the Violin Department, the concert brings together eight outstanding young violin teachers from the department, and specially invites cello professor Guo Yongsheng, guest soprano Lu Lei, and three teachers from the Keyboard Department – Shi He, Song Jiayi and Xiao Xiyuan – to join the performance. This cross-departmental and cross-disciplinary collaboration will infuse the concert with richer timbral layers and heightened artistic expression.

In terms of programming, the concert can be seen as a condensed "global musical journey": from the German-Austrian Romantic classic of Brahms's Violin Sonata No. 1, "Regenlied", and the French late Romanticism of Franck's Violin Sonata, to the deeply lyrical string quartet by Russian nationalist composer Borodin; from the fiery rhythmic pulse of Piazzolla, Argentina's "King of Tango", to the delicate elegance of Hahn's art songs from France's Belle Époque; and further, the distinctive charm of Spanish folk songs and the stunning resonance of contemporary Hollywood film music – the styles span nearly two hundred years and reach across Europe, the Americas and Latin America, allowing the audience to savour the musical allure of diverse cultures within a single evening.

The performance formats are just as varied as the musical styles. In addition to classic violin and piano duos, there will be the seamless rapport of a string quartet, and a specially arranged combination of soprano and classical guitar – the guitar's refined timbre lends a fresh poetic quality to the art songs. Meanwhile, the virtuosic pizzicato of The Devil's Dance and the demanding contemporary techniques of The Red Violin Caprices will fully showcase the young faculty's professional mastery, inviting the audience to experience the manifold possibilities of stage art through moments of tension and release.

As a regular fixture of the Violin Department each semester, the Young Faculty Special Concert serves as an important platform for teachers to maintain their own stage performance form and transform practical experience into teaching ability. As Professor Wang Hong says, "Only when teachers themselves continue to shine on stage can they feed the freshest musical nourishment back to their students in the practice room."

On the evening of 8 May, let us gather in the Menuhin Hall and, amidst the flowing strains of strings, embark together on this romantic rendezvous of "Flowers, Moon and Musical Poetry".
