When We Begin to Sing | A New Vocal Adventure for Menuhin Youth

On June 4 at 7:00 p.m., Menuhin Hall at the Qingdao Yehudi Menuhin School will warmly present the themed concert "When We Begin to Sing."

Students who ordinarily devote themselves to instrumental studies—violin, cello, piano, French horn, and more—will set aside their primary instruments and step onto the vocal stage. With live piano and guitar accompaniment throughout much of the programme, these young musicians will take voice as their primary medium and instruments as their auxiliary support, embarking on a wholly new artistic crossover.

For many of the participants, this concert marks their debut as solo vocalists—a courageous step beyond their professional comfort zones, as they allow their own voices to be heard on stage for the very first time. Their interpretations may still carry a touch of youthful rawness, but growth is not defined by flawless arrival; it lies in the audacity to take that first step and the sincerity of expression. As Professor Zhang Wanzhe, Director of the Comprehensive Music Studies Department, once remarked: "Every time you open your mouth to sing, you grow; every time you sing, you are brave."

This concert serves as a vibrant embodiment of our school's philosophy of holistic education. It respects each student's artistic nature, encourages cross-disciplinary exploration and self-transcendence, and broadens the horizons and possibilities of personal growth.

At the same time, the event vividly illustrates our educational hallmark of "professional learning with diversified development." While ensuring that students build a solid foundation in their primary fields, the school provides them with a range of growth platforms—including secondary major studies and diverse stage performance opportunities—so that music education extends beyond instrumental mastery to awaken each child's innate expressive talents and comprehensive artistic literacy.

On June 4, we invite you to join us in Menuhin Hall, to listen as our young singers raise their voices, and to witness the beautiful blossoming of youth and courage.
