Polyphony on Strings | Violin Department Teaching Showcase Concert to Debut on May 15

How does a single violin build a polyphonic world of multiple voices? Following the success of the "Floral Moon and Poetic Tones" Young Faculty Concert presented by the Violin Department on May 8, the "Polyphony on Strings" Violin Department Teaching Showcase Concert will take place in Menuhin Hall at 7:00 p.m. on May 15. Curated under the leadership of Professor Wang Hong, Head of the Violin Department, the concert brings together twelve students from Grade 3 through Grade 11 in a programme of Baroque unaccompanied string masterworks, comprehensively presenting the systematic outcomes of our school's violin instruction and the progressive developmental trajectory of our students.

1. A Complete K‑12 Teaching Continuum – Witnessing Growth at Every Step

The programme is structured according to the pedagogical progression, spanning the entire primary through secondary school curriculum, and clearly illustrating the systematic training pathway of the Violin Department. Lower‑grade students will open with the Presto and Allegro movements from Telemann's Fantasias, demonstrating the technical foundation and musical perception they are establishing at this stage. Middle‑grade students will then perform dance movements from Bach's Suites, beginning to engage with polyphonic texture and musical logic. Upper‑grade students will perform movements such as Grave, Largo, Andante, Presto, and Adagio from Bach's Sonatas, transforming years of accumulated learning into more mature musical expression.

A single concert thus connects the complete journey of violin study – from the first steps of beginners to the refinement of advanced players. On the same evening, the audience can witness a Grade 3 student making their solo debut on stage, alongside a Grade 11 student interpreting an Adagio with personal understanding. This breadth is the most direct manifestation of the integrated K‑12 education model at Qingdao Menuhin.

2. Same Piece, Different Interpretations – Showcasing the Diversity of Teaching

The concert features a special segment with two works performed by different students. Bach's Allemande from the Partita No. 2 in D minor for Unaccompanied Violin will be presented successively by a Grade 5 student and a Grade 7 student; the Andante from Bach's Sonata No. 2 in A minor for Unaccompanied Violin will be interpreted by a Grade 10 student and a Grade 11 student respectively. With the same classical repertoire delivered by students at different levels and under different instructors, these varied interpretations vividly demonstrate the individualized educational approach of Qingdao Menuhin.

In addition, the concert includes one piece for viola: the Prelude and Gigue from Bach's Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, performed on viola by a Grade 7 student. The viola adaptation of Bach's cello suites is a well‑established performance practice in the classical music world, adding a rich tonal contrast to a programme otherwise centered on the violin.

3. The Stage – An Integral Part of Musical Learning

This concert provides each participating student with an independent solo opportunity. From the Grade 3 student making their debut to the Grade 11 student with considerable performance experience, every participant practices focus, stage presence, and the translation of practice‑room diligence into expressive performance. Stage experience is an irreplaceable component of musical education, enabling each student to build experience and confidence through authentic performance. This is a natural extension of our school's holistic education philosophy into teaching practice.

On May 15, step into Menuhin Hall to hear twelve distinct voices, and witness twelve unfolding stories of growth.
