I. Introduction

Located in the scenic Tangdao Bay Coastal Park in Qingdao, The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao is a K12 full-time academic credential school that Specialised in music. As the sole authorised branch of The Yehudi Menuhin school - known as "the cradle of talented musicians", The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao carries with them the artistic and spiritual inheritance of Master Yehudi Menuhin; integrates The Yehudi Menuhin School’s educational models and adopts the essence of Chinese and Western culture. It provides western classical music education with specialist tuition in strings, piano, wind instruments and vocal. The School provides world-class education for young talents in China and East Asia and prepares students for the top music conservatories and universities around the world.


All those wanting to apply must follow a formal application process. The purpose of this process is to enable staff at the School to make an evaluation of each applicant from both a musical and academic perspective, to assess their current ability and identify outstanding potential. Please read the application process carefully and complete it honestly and accurately.



II.Student Grade and Conditional Admissions Policy

Admissions of the School is open to students in Grade 1 to 12. Candidate admission is based on the results of the Preliminary Audition and Full Audition.

IV. Application Process 

Stage 1: Application Form & Preliminary Audition

1)The first stage of the admissions process is to complete an application form, which may be obtained through the official website, official WeChat Account or may be requested from the Registrar by emailing admissions@menuhinschool.cn. Please fill in the subject line of the application email in the format of "Applicant's Name + Major".

2)Application form should be submitted along with recordings of the applicant performing two contrasting pieces of their own choice on their first instrument applied on the Registrar (current work, within two months). The Directors of Music will review the application and recordings and then decide whether to invite the applicant to take part in a full audition. The applicant will usually receive the notice of the preliminary assessment result within 3-5 working days after the complete submission of the application.

Guidelines for Pre-Screening Recordings:

• Recordings must be genuinely performed by the applicant . During the whole performance, the applicant must always be seen clearly and be entirely on the screen in the video recording.

• Video files do not need to be taken by professional equipment. We accept works recorded by smart phones.

• You are required to upload your files in a Video format. Acceptable file types include: .avi, .fly, .m4v, .mkt, .mov, .mpeg, .mp4, .wmv.

• Clearly label each of the uploaded file with the name of the composer and work/movement.

• Recordings must not be edited, nor should any effects such as “reverb” be added.

• If you use an iPhone to record your video recording, be sure to select “best compatibility”in settings (select Camera, under Format Option)

• Please upload the recordings directly in the form of email attachment. If the file size exceeds the attachment limit, you can upload it to your Baidu aloud, and write the video link and file extraction code in the body of the email.

• Review your recordings before uploading to ensure that they are of good quality and represent your best work to date.

3) Please prepare a letter of recommendation from a music professional.The letter of recommendation must be written by the recommender himself and sent as an attachment to admissions@menuhinschool.cn through the recommender’s own email address. Please use the "Applicant name + Recommendation name" in the Subject line.

4)Please prepare a personal statement in both Chinese and English.

5)Please prepare a personal resume in both Chinese and English.

Stage 2: Full Audition

Applicants who successfully pass the pre-screening portion of the application process will be invited to register for an audition. At present, the audition is both online and offline. An expert evaluation team composed of principals, music directors, foreign principals, relevant department heads and teachers will further evaluate the applicant’s professional ability online. Students should go to the designated place within the specified time according to the notice of the admissions office, and the bilingual teaching assistant will assist them to complete the audition on site. At the same time, the executive principal will have an interview with parents or guardians. We will inform the applicant of the audition result in 3-5 working days after the audition. Students who performed excellently will be provided with an admission letter. Applicants should provide the following materials on the day of the audition:

4)Instruments and scores (except for piano)


Stage 3: Campus Experience Day (optional)

For the applicants who need further evaluation in terms of artistic performance and behavior, the School will require them to participate in the Campus Experience Day. Applicants will be given a specific date to attend. Based on the comprehensive evaluation of each student, the School will arrange one or more of the following activities on the Campus Experience Day:

1)The expert evaluation team will interview the applicants

2)The expert evaluation team will interview the applicants’ parents

3)Applicants will cooperate with the accompaniment teacher to play two contrasting pieces of their own choice from different stylistic periods on their first instrument and one piece unaccompanied

4)The evaluation team will evaluate the applicant on their second instrument, and the applicant will perform a piece with the accompaniment teacher

5)The evaluation team will test the applicant’s learning ability. The applicant will learn a piece within 20 minutes, and then take the sight-reading assessment

6)The evaluation team will conduct an aural test on the applicant

7)The head of the relevant department will give a professional guidance to the applicant

8)Applicants will participate in a designated academic course or a designated extra-curricular activity.
