On November 24, The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao welcomed dozens of new families to explore the beautiful campus, experience diverse courses, and gain an in-depth understanding of cutting-edge educational philosophies while discussing personalized plans for their children’s future. The families participating in Open Day had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a YMSQ student and parent, opening the door to music education and embarking on the fascinating journey of holistic education.
A Day as a YMSQ Student
As the children toured the campus, they were thrilled by the idea of studying in a stunning environment surrounded on three sides by the sea, practicing in acoustically designed music rooms, and performing at the weekly Wednesday lunchtime concerts. They were inspired by the possibility of realizing their musical dreams just like the school’s graduates, and by meeting renowned performers and educators. The excitement was palpable as they eagerly imagined themselves becoming part of the school community.
“This school is so beautiful, with the sea in the distance. Playing the piano here will be such a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to become a student at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao!” — Peter, a student participating in Open Day
Each YMSQ student’s schedule includes specialized classes, core musicianship courses, and academic subjects. On Open Day, children had the opportunity to experience these courses firsthand and get a taste of what a typical day at YMSQ feels like.
In the piano class, Associate Professor Tian Jiaxin provided detailed guidance to the young pianists, teaching them different playing techniques to explore various musical textures and enjoy the experience of diverse musical layers.
In the core musicianship class, the children practiced clapping rhythms and even improvised their compositions. Their musical talent and creativity were fully displayed under the guidance of Li Fengming, a core musicianship teacher at the school.
In the English class, the children engaged in a cross-disciplinary learning experience. What happens when English and music collide? Teacher Jakub introduced musical terms and combined instrument sounds with English vocabulary through interactive games, helping the children learn the English names of classic musical instruments while deepening their understanding of them.
In the club activities, DIY oil painting sparked the children’s creativity and imagination, allowing them to create their own art pieces. During lunchtime, the children were impressed by the delicious meal served in the school’s cafeteria.
The thoughtful arrangements, fun course experiences, and beautiful learning environment deeply captivated the children. Many of them expressed a strong desire to join The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao soon and begin their exciting educational journey here!
A Day as a YMSQ Parent
The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao emphasizes holistic education, and this was reflected not only in the in-depth presentations during the information session but also in the close communication between teachers and parents. This gave parents a detailed understanding of how the school helps students achieve all-around development through its faculty, curriculum, and college planning, while also addressing children’s professional strengths, academic planning, and future career paths. Parents had the opportunity for in-depth discussions on how to best support their child’s future development, taking into account current international trends and policies.
“The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao has shown me another possibility for learning music. Music isn’t just about becoming a performer—it offers many different paths. I hope parents will ask more questions, learn more, and find the right path for their children at YMSQ.” — Teacher Zheng, Open Day participant
One topic that often causes tension between parents and young musicians is practicing. To address this, the Open Day included a special lecture on this theme.
“The Trilogy of Performance: Interest, Understanding, and Expression.”
Associate Professor Tian Jiaxin from the Keyboard Department used vivid language and practical examples to explain how to find points of interest in practicing and how to engage in a dialogue with the piano, revealing the instrument’s versatility and beauty. She emphasized that when performing works from different composers across various periods and styles, it’s essential to focus on the content itself. Parents, as their children’s supporters, should become fans of their children’s musical journeys and immerse themselves in the learning process.
Once professional interest is established, achieving understanding and expression requires extensive input, building a deep cultural foundation and practical experience, while also understanding life itself.
Becoming a YMSQ Student
On Open Day, some students, who had already passed the preliminary video audition, participated in their entrance exams and interviews confidently (please note that the number of exam slots on Open Day is limited and requires prior reservation).
The next Open Day on December 29 will include the usual campus tour, school briefing, masterclasses, and college counseling lectures. Additionally, that evening, the Keyboard Department will host a piano concerto and a student-composed music concert. The concert will feature piano concertos and student compositions, and the newly formed student orchestra will take the stage as the grand finale. When the students transform the piano repertoire into a grand orchestral arrangement and present it through the remarkable two-manual keyboard instrument, you will witness the limitless possibilities of music and creativity!
