On June 19th, Professor Cho-Liang Lin, a world-renowned China-born violinist, visited The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao and delivered an in-depth masterclass to faculty and students in the Menuhin Hall. As the 2022 "Instrumentalist of the Year" by Musical America, Artistic Director of the La Jolla Music Festival, and a tenured professor at Rice University, Professor Cho-Liang Lin's visit represented not only an artistic legacy but also a significant enhancement of our school's international faculty.
Masterclass: Inspiring the Future with Mastery
In addition to our school's faculty and students, the masterclass attracted music students and parents from across the country, filling the venue to capacity. Focusing on "listening" as the core principle, Professor Cho-Liang Lin guided students in refining their skills:
· Emphasizing the Essence of Musical Expression: He encouraged students to "invite the violin to produce sound rather than force it," highlighting the importance of tonal variation and emotional engagement.
· Meticulous Attention to Details: From rhythm analysis to finger technique optimization, he conveyed a rigorous approach to "slow practice for precision" in a humorous manner.
· Elevating Artistic Interpretation: He urged performers to adopt a "strong posture" and visualize vivid scenarios, explaining the profound philosophy that "rests are more precious than notes."
· A Standout Moment: Wang Weikuan, a YMSQ student admitted to the dual-major program at The Juilliard School in the United States, performed Hungarian Rhapsody on stage. While highly praising his talent, Professor Cho-Liang Lin drew from his own growth experiences to encourage him to "never stop the pursuit of excellence" and offered professional development advice.
Appointment Ceremony: Strengthening International Music Education Alliances
At the conclusion of the masterclass, President Siqing Lu personally presented Professor Cho-Liang Lin with an appointment letter, officially welcoming him as a visiting professor at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao. President Lu stated, "Professor Cho-Liang Lin's joining not only recognizes our school's professional excellence but also signifies our commitment to maintaining an international character in music education. With the purity of an artist and the passion of an educator, he will set a benchmark for 'pursuit of excellence' among the younger generation—a core tenet of Menuhin's ‘holistic education’. Together, we will shoulder the mission of empowering YMSQ students to engage with the global stage through world-class artistic expression."
