British Ambassador to China Peter Wilson Visits The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao

On 7th March, British Ambassador to China Peter Wilson, accompanied by Chris Butland, Head of the Northern China Engagement Unit at the British Embassy in Beijing, Linda Xie, Shandong Lead at the British Embassy, and Jason Li, Head of the China Network at the UK Department for Business and Trade, visited The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao. The delegation was accompanied by Fan Qizhi, Director of the Qingdao Municipal Foreign Affairs Office.

At the school's Culture Centre, Ambassador Wilson was briefed on the founding process of The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao, and expressed his strong approval of the close collaboration between the Chinese and British sides in both the successful establishment and ongoing operation of the school. Ambassador Wilson and his delegation also conducted a detailed tour of the school's teaching building, practice rooms, faculty studios, rehearsal spaces, and concert hall, offering high praise for the school's world-class teaching facilities. He commented that a school located in a scenic national park with such exceptional educational facilities is a rare find anywhere in the world.

Furthermore, Founding Principal Lu Siqing informed Ambassador Wilson that the school has attracted musicians and educators from around the globe to Qingdao, forming a formidable and international teaching team. This greatly impressed the Ambassador, who took particular note of the presence of faculty members from the United Kingdom and those who had studied there. He also had a warm exchange with British teacher David Colin Regan.

Music Director Thomas Rosenkranz provided the Ambassador with a systematic overview of the exchanges and visits between the two sister schools, supported by official bodies, particularly in the diplomatic sphere, and various sectors of society in both countries. These included two study tours to the UK in 2025 and 2026, which featured acclaimed performances at London's King's Place and the Mansion House of the City of London. The Ambassador also noted that Zheng Zeguang, China's Ambassador to the UK, had personally attended these events. Having been established for just over three years, The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao has already seen numerous graduates admitted to prestigious UK institutions. In turn, many world-renowned British music schools, including the Royal College of Music, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, have established their examination centres in China at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao. These exchanges have transcended the realm of inter-institutional cooperation to become a sustained and integral part of China-UK cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Ambassador Wilson and his delegation also enjoyed a wonderful performance by the school's students, which they greatly praised. After the performance, the Ambassador warmly shook hands with each student, posed for photographs, and took a genuine interest in their studies, interests, and future aspirations. Ambassador Wilson expressed how exciting it was to see such a school thriving in China, continuously nurturing young musicians who are stepping onto the world stage. He noted that it is not only bringing invaluable international resources to youth music education in China, but more importantly, serving as a key participant and driver of cultural exchange and friendly relations between China and the UK. He concluded by reaffirming the British Embassy in Beijing's commitment to supporting The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao as it continues to forge new achievements across various fields.
