Professor Song Yi Appointed as Visiting Professor of Double Bass at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao

During the 5th International Double Bass Festival, Professor Song Yi, Professor of Double Bass at the Central Conservatory of Music, was officially appointed as Visiting Professor of Double Bass at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao. This appointment will further strengthen the School’s teaching capacity in double bass, bringing more systematic professional guidance and cutting-edge industry perspectives.

Professor Song Yi is a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Double Bass at the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music and the Central Conservatory of Music, and the founder of the Central Conservatory of Music Double Bass Aircraft Carrier Orchestra. He also serves as an artist for China Orchestral Network and a council member of the String Society of the Chinese Musicians’ Association. He began his musical training at an early age, studying under Mr. Zhang Xuhao of the Harbin Song and Dance Ensemble. In 1994, he graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music with a bachelor’s degree, where he studied under Professor Fu Da. In 2004, he earned a master’s degree from the Royal Northern College of Music in the UK, studying under Professor Jiří Hudec, Principal Double Bass of the Czech Philharmonic, and additionally received the College’s highest performance diploma, the Professional Performance Certificate.

Over decades of teaching, Professor Song Yi has devoted himself to double bass pedagogy, having nurtured over one hundred undergraduate and postgraduate graduates who now perform in leading orchestras and teach at professional institutions worldwide. Many of his students have achieved outstanding results in international double bass competitions. In 2012, he founded the Central Conservatory of Music Double Bass Aircraft Carrier Orchestra, dedicated to promoting double bass artistry and building a professional exchange platform. At the 4th International Double Bass Festival in 2024, Professor Song Yi conducted a double bass ensemble of 350 performers, successfully setting the Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Double Bass Ensemble,” which garnered significant acclaim within the industry.
