The internationally renowned ICONIC Awards recently announced its 2026 winners. The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao was named Winner in the Architecture – Education category.

The ICONIC Awards is an international architecture and interior design award presented by the German Design Council. Dedicated to advancing innovation in architectural design and themed around the intersection of architecture, strategy and business, it invites forward-looking architecture, interior design, building products and strategic development concepts from around the world. The awards not only recognise outstanding design quality, but also emphasise the deep integration of design and value. This edition of the ICONIC Awards was organised in partnership with the BDA (Association of German Architects), the BDIA (Association of German Interior Architects and Designers) and the authoritative architecture magazine DETAIL. Following a rigorous month-long selection process—from initial screening of a large number of projects and independent scoring by the jury, to consolidated review and progressive filtering—the awards ultimately honoured design projects that combine forward-looking vision with exceptional craftsmanship.

“All for the children, all built for the children, and all for the children’s artistic expression” is the fundamental philosophy behind the architectural design of The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao. The design was led by the renowned Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd. (TJAD), inspired by “waves beating against rocks, rhythm in motion.” Through refined spatial planning and architectural form, the design blends traditional and modern elements. It not only achieves visual harmony with the city skyline, but also reveals a distinctive character through detail. Architecture, landscape and interior design are conceived as a seamless whole, shaping a public building that balances individuality with overall coherence. In particular, the architecture employs the dynamic interplay of light, breaks with convention, and explores a new architectural geometry and aesthetic, taking fair-faced concrete architecture to an exceptional standard. The overall building embodies the integration of nature and inspiration. It creates a tranquil setting within the bustling city, captures beautiful sea views, and encourages interaction with nature. The lush greenery around the campus offers students an additional sense of peace and comfort beyond their studies, further inspiring artistic creativity and helping them enter an ideal state of musical and artistic expression.
