At The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao, we believe that while music and the arts are central to our students’ development, it’s equally important to nurture their growth in all areas of life. Guided by our holistic education philosophy, we strive to offer diverse pathways for personal development. We encourage students to get involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities that help them explore their interests, develop new skills, and build their abilities. Each weekend, the school introduces activities like frisbee, street dance, museum tours, and reading clubs. These activities not only enrich students’ lives at Yehudi Menuhin, but they also support their learning and personal growth in the long term.
Last weekend, the students had the chance to experience frisbee with a sports expert. Through this activity, they improved their fitness, built friendships, and discovered the true value of teamwork.
Champion Coaching: Embracing the Spirit of Sport
The frisbee session was led by Xu Haoyuan, the founder of ultimate frisbee in Shandong Province and head coach of the Qingdao GS Frisbee Team. As an advocate for the sport, Coach Xu has guided his students to numerous provincial, national, and international championships.
Coach Xu kicked off the session with a warm-up and provided a thorough introduction to the basics of frisbee, teaching the students the techniques involved. The group was then divided into teams to practice, with Coach Xu guiding them as they gradually mastered the fundamentals of throwing and catching.
Frisbee is about more than just throwing and catching—it’s a dynamic sport that requires strategy, courage, and teamwork. Through practice and friendly competition, the students learned how to work together, make calm decisions under pressure, and find their roles within the team. Coach Xu’s motto, “The disc never touches the ground; never give up,” encapsulated the spirit of the game, while also serving as an inspiring reminder for students about perseverance in life. During the competition, they learned the importance of respecting their opponents and following the rules, while also understanding how to contribute to the team’s success.
Parents and Children Competing Together, Sharing Special Moments
When parents joined in on the frisbee fun, the atmosphere became even more joyful and heartwarming. Students and parents formed mixed teams, divided into yellow and blue teams. Together, they worked towards victory, with each precise frisbee pass being met with cheers and each moment of teamwork strengthening the bond between them. Laughter and sweat blended on the green field, as parents rediscovered their inner child, and children felt the warmth and support of their families.
Instilling respect for others and understanding the importance of following the rules are core values The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao seeks to impart through its holistic approach to education. The weekend club activities at YMSQ are carefully designed to explore various aspects of students’ development—whether it’s in the arts, sports, reading, or academics—creating opportunities for them to express themselves and engage with the world around them.
