Dr. Wanzhe Zhang is a world-renowned soprano, vocal educator, and cultural ambassador celebrated for her extensive international career spanning over two decades in performance and music education. She has appeared on some of the world's most prestigious stages, including the United Nations Headquarters, Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, the National Opera of Belgrade, and Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Her artistry in multi-lingual operatic and art song performance has earned her high acclaim for blending technical mastery with deep cultural sensitivity.
She graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the New England Conservatory in Boston, and is currently the first dual doctoral candidate in Vocal Performance and Chamber Music at the University of Arts in Belgrade. In 2018, Dr. Zhang made history as the first Chinese leading soprano at the National Opera of Belgrade since its founding in 1868. In 2024, she was awarded the prestigious title “People’s Artist of Yugoslavia” and was elected as a full Academician of the International Research Academy of Science and Arts (IRASA), recognizing her outstanding contributions to musical diplomacy and youth education.
As a signed artist of Anima Records (France), she co-founded the “Silk & Wind Duo” with pianist Dejan Sinadinovic. Their album Serbia · China Stage has been permanently archived in the Loeb Music Library at Harvard University and the World Music Archive at MIT, and is considered a landmark work of East-West cultural dialogue.
Dr. Zhang has held teaching positions at Dana Hall School (U.S.), UNION Nikola Tesla University (Serbia), and now serves as Director of Integrated Music Studies and Professor of Voice at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao. Her students have been admitted to leading institutions such as Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music, Harvard University, Columbia University, and Boston University, and have won top awards in international vocal competitions.
She advocates a holistic pedagogy based on a “Voice–Language–Culture” triadic approach, emphasizing vocal technique, stylistic interpretation, and multilingual stage experience to cultivate globally competitive young vocalists.
As a cultural project leader, Dr. Zhang has initiated and directed numerous international collaborations, including the Global Intercultural Performing Arts Cast (GIPAC), the Silk & Wind Duo concert tours, the China-Serbia Youth Arts Festival, and the “Ciao” International Music Competition. Her work continues to serve as a vital link in Belt and Road cultural diplomacy between China and Europe.
Currently, at the Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the voice curriculum and establishing a world-class vocal training platform, combining her global vision and artistic excellence to nurture the next generation of Chinese talent.
