Professor Guo Yongsheng, a distinguished Chinese-American cellist and music educator, graduated with honors from the Central Conservatory of Music in 1988 and pursued further advanced studies in the United States. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Michigan State University and the University of Southern California under the guidance of eminent figures such as Aldo Parisot, Maurice Gendron, Owen Carmen, Eleonore Schoenfeld, and Ronald Leonard. This mentorship deeply influenced his artistic vision and teaching approach.
Professor Guo Yongsheng has served as the principal cellist for several internationally renowned orchestras, including the Grand Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Flint Symphony Orchestra, Midland Symphony Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Collective Symphony in the USA, and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in China. His collaborations with eminent musicians through performances with the Global Chinese Orchestra and other ensembles demonstrate consummate artistry across continents.
In the realm of music education, Professor Guo’s pedagogical accomplishments are highlighted by his students’ admissions to prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, University of Southern California, Peabody Institute, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Royal Academy of Music (UK), Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Germany). Many of his students have also become laureates at significant international competitions. A passionate advocate for music education in China, Professor Guo has conducted masterclasses at several notable Chinese institutions, including Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Northwest Minzu University, and Sichuan Normal University. His expertise as an adjudicator is sought after in prestigious competitions, such as the upcoming 2024 Yamal Symphony International Young Musicians Competition, where he continues to identify and nurture emerging musical talents.
