Huang Xiaonan began her studies in 2007 at the Affiliated High School of Xinghai Conservatory of Music, under the guidance of Professor Ma Kaiyi. In 2013, she was awarded a full scholarship, including tuition and accommodation, to study at the Lynn Conservatory of Music, USA, after being recognised by renowned violinist Elmar Oliveira. She continued her academic journey at the Eastman School of Music, where she pursued her Master’s degree and was awarded the prestigious Carol Cirotzki Barsh Scholarship. In 2019, she was accepted into Eastman’s Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) programme, becoming one of only two violin doctoral candidates that year, studying under Mikhail Kopelman, the former first violinist of the Borodin Quartet. Huang earned her DMA from Eastman at the age of 26.

 

Huang has achieved numerous accolades, including First Prize in the Hong Kong International Violin Competition (China Division), Gold Medal at the "Dandelion Cup" National Youth Art Talent Competition in China, and Second Prize at the 12th International Young Artist String Competition, USA. In 2021, she received several prestigious awards, including the Grand Prize at the Metropolitan International Music Competition, USA; First Prize at the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition; Second Prize at the Odin International Music Competition; and First Prize at the Golden Classical Music Awards.

 

Huang Xiaonan has performed extensively across different countries and regions. She has given solo recitals at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Hatch Recital Hall, Kilbourn Hall, and the historic Grafenegg Castle in Austria. In 2015, she was invited to perform at Mar-a-Lago for former US President Donald Trump and other political figures. In 2019, she gave a solo recital at the George Eastman House in New York and collaborated on stage with the celebrated violinist Joshua Bell. Since returning to China in 2022, she has performed at prominent venues, including the Xinghai Concert Hall, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Xiamen Hongtai Concert Hall, Zhejiang Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Centre, Urumqi Concert Hall, and the Macao Cultural Centre. Huang is also active at international classical music festivals and has received numerous scholarships. Her festival appearances include the Heifetz International Music Institute, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Chautauqua Music Festival, and the Salzburg Music Academy in Austria. In 2015, she collaborated with Elmar Oliveira on the recording of "The Golden Rules". The renowned French violin pedagogue Pierre Amoyal praised her music for its "unique and beautiful tone."

 

In 2018, Huang was appointed as an adjunct violin instructor at the Eastman School of Music. She integrates Chinese, American, and Russian pedagogical methods into her teaching. Many of her students have been admitted to top institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory of Music. In 2022, two of her students won first prizes in both the junior and adult divisions of the Milan International Violin Competition in Italy.
