Huang Yi began his musical education at the Central Conservatory of Music Elementary School in 1991 and progressed through its affiliated Middle School in 1992. In 1998, he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music as the top student in his specialty and spent eleven years studying under the globally respected violin educator, Professor Lin Yaoji. Huang Yi later earned dual master's degrees in violin and chamber music from the École Normale de Musique de Paris in France.
His notable achievements include winning the gold medal at the Chausson International Violin Competition in Paris in 2004. Huang Yi has also served as a judge and master class lecturer in numerous prestigious competitions, such as the “CCTV Violin & Piano TV Competition” in Shenzhen in 2008; the “American Stradivari International Violin Competition” in China in 2013 and 2016; and the first “Shmolz-Mints International Violin Competition” co-hosted by Xinhua News and the Central Conservatory of Music in 2017. He was also the Secretary-General for the Zhuhai International Strings Masterclass and the Qingdao International String Festival in 2018, and in 2019, he judged the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition in the US and conducted a master class at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Huang Yi’s students have also achieved remarkable success under his tutelage. In May 2017, Xie Zhuonan earned third place in the youth category at the 24th Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition in Italy. Liang Zhengdong won the “Wieniawski Performance Award” at the Hong Kong International Violin Competition in February 2011, and in July 2013, won the Elite Award in the professional category at the first Menuhin Competition for Young Violinists in Hong Kong. In April 2016, So Qianxun (Paloma So) secured first place in the youth category at the fourth Novosibirsk International Violin Competition, becoming the youngest top prize winner in the history of this renowned international event.
