Yehudi Menuhin

As one of the 20th century's most esteemed violinists, Yehudi Menuhin had already distinguished himself as a world-touring virtuoso by the tender age of 13. He was thrice elected as the President of the International Music Council of UNESCO, earning a sublime reputation in the international arts as an "authoritative interpreter" of music for the violin. After listening to Menuhin's performance, the renowned physicist Albert Einstein famously exclaimed, "Now I know there is a God in heaven."

Throughout his life, Maestro Menuhin was dedicated to music and music education. He was influential in creating three globally acclaimed musical initiatives. Menuhin founded the International Menuhin Music Academy and Music Festival in Switzerland, which became a significant celebration in the world of classical music. In 1983, he established the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition which to this day is considered one of the most prestigious international competitions for young violinists. Outstanding Chinese violinists, including Lu Siqing, Ning Feng, and Chai Liang, have garnered awards from this competition. In 1963, he founded the Yehudi Menuhin School in Cobham, United Kingdom. There Menuhin devoted himself to the school and committed to a holistic education approach and cultivated elite musicians. As a result, the school has become a "cradle of musical genius.”

Yehudi Menuhin had a deep reverence for the ancient Chinese civilization. He always carried a German translation of Tao Te Ching: Laozi in his violin case, using it as a guide for his life. He believed that this book was a distillation of lucid wisdom, filled with profound philosophies to guide one’s life, and considered it a shared treasure of humanity.
