First Master Class of the New Year by Professor Qin Liwei!

On January 3rd, Professor Qin Liwei of the Cello Department at The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao kicked off the first master class of the new year. Drawing from his dual perspectives as a teacher and musician, Professor Qin provided personalized instruction to ten cello students. This session proved immensely beneficial for both students and teachers.

During the class, Professor Qin offered targeted technical guidance for specific pieces and explained their backgrounds. He also enriched the students' musical tastes from a performer's perspective. While praising the students' progress, he reminded them that technical proficiency is merely the foundation for becoming a musician. He emphasized that technique must serve the music, cautioning against mechanical playing. Instead, he encouraged students to invest emotionally in their music to evoke an emotional response from the audience, immersing them in the world of classical music beyond just its melodies.

Professor Qin also integrated the core musicianship curriculum of The Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao, teaching students how to manage pre-performance nerves effectively. He advised them to imagine each performance as their last, focusing entirely on the music to create a unique experience for the audience, thus demonstrating the poise of a true maestro.

Regarding career planning, Professor Qin encouraged students to understand the true reasons behind their lifelong commitment to the cello. He urged them to explore the deeper meanings of each piece they play and to find satisfaction and genuine joy in the music. This, he believes, will add value to their musical journey and personal growth.
