Xie Nan studied with Prof. Zhu Xiongzhen, Prof. Huang Xiaozhi, and Prof. Lin Yaoji, and received her Master's Degree with honors and went to the U.S. for further study with Prof. Alice Schoenfeld. Xie has been coached by violin virtuoso I. stern, S. Accardo, and P. Zukerman, and was highly appreciated.
Extremely talented Xie Nan, at the age of nine, won the second prize in the Guangdong Provincial Music Competition for her performance of Mendelssohn's works; at the age of fourteen, she made a name for herself in the Beijing International Youth Violin Competition; and at the age of sixteen, she won again in the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poland, winning the only prize for the “Best Performance of a Wieniawski Work”. Z. BRZEWSKI, the chairman of the jury, described her performance as “a passionate and wonderful performance…a lingering aftertaste”. The famous British violinist R. Masters called her “a marvelous talent”.
In 1999, Xie Nan successfully recorded and published "Kreutzer 42 Etudes", which is regarded as the bible of violin, becoming the first violinist in the world to record this work (complete set), and also recorded and published several solo albums, such as "The Past of String Instruments" and "Ma Sicong's Collection". In recent years, Xie Nan was awarded the Ministry of Education's "New Century Talents" funding program, and successfully recorded and published "Brahms Three Violin Sonatas" and simultaneously released teaching materials, which filled the gap in China. The album "Meet" was published and distributed by China Record Corporation and won the 2019 Audiophile Album Best Art Award; the latest album "The Four Seasons" won the 2022 Audiophile Album Best Chamber Music Award. Xie Nan has been honored by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China many times, and CCTV has recorded her solo albums and broadcasted them nationwide.
Over the years, Xie Nan has often participated in major performances and exchanges around the world, visiting more than 20 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Japan, Austria and so on, and has been well received. She has been invited to perform as a violin soloist in important performances such as the Beijing International Music Festival, the Asian Ministers of Culture Forum, and the CCTV Music Station Third Anniversary Celebration Concert. She has performed as a violin soloist with many famous groups both in China and the world, and has received rave reviews and enthusiastic responses wherever she has gone. Xie has also acted as a judge for the CCTV Piano and Violin Competitions, as well as other highly influential international competitions. She has been honored as the 2021 Baosteel Outstanding Teacher and the Violin Director of Baoli Orchestral Festival.
As an outstanding Chinese musician, Xie Nan is determined to promote Chinese musical works as her own responsibility. Since 2002, she has performed the violin concerto “Butterfly Lovers” in the Golden Hall of Vienna and famous concert halls in Holland, Japan, South Africa, etc. She has also collaborated to perform the Chinese version of “Butterfly Lovers” in Hong Kong and Taipei, which has been a great success, and she has been called the “Queen of Butterflies” by the media. Her performances are magnificent and passionate, her tone is mellow and sweet, and her music is delicate, touching and soulful. Her outstanding interpretation is known as “the calmness of passion, the spark of reason”.
Since teaching at the Orchestra Department of the Central Conservatory of Music, she has devoted her passionate love to teaching, and her students have won numerous awards in major competitions both in China and the world. In 2008, after the Wenchuan earthquake, she was concerned about the disaster area and organized a charity concert. She has also been invited to give master classes in famous music conservatories in the United States, Canada, Singapore and other countries, which have been highly praised.
